Are the good old days truly the good old days? Grab your pickax, rope, and handcuff key for its time to break out of boredom jail and join Kinsey and Anna on the lam from the daily grind. Yes, fellow travelers, today’s adventure focuses on some of the past century’s more absurd, bizarre, and purely entertaining prison escapes. Everyone knows of Dillinger, the barber-shop dummies of Alcatraz, El Chapo… but have you heard about the pint-sized Houdini, Jack Sheppard? Or the brazen Biddle Brothers and history's version of the Bronco sleigh chase? Advancing to more modern times, Anna shares all about America’s problems with downed ducks, star-crossed lovers, and France’s obsessions with using helicopters and food to bust out of the pen. So sit back, relax, and plot your own path to freedom as you listen to this week’s episode of Oh the Good Old Days!

Are the good old days truly the good old days? On today's journey, Kinsey and Anna follow the bright light into the not-so-distant past, the darkness illuminated by an eerie glimmer, and find a simply glowing story. Well maybe glowing isn't the right word… maybe radiating? Arriving in the early decades of the 20th century, our hosts encounter the inspirational Radium Girls who unknowingly placed themselves in harm's way while working for the US Radium Corporation. Explore their legal battle, fight for employees’ rights, and the societal implications still felt today. They also learn about the ill-fated Eben Byers whose daily dose of Radithor (history’s first energized drink) spelled his doom. Looking to the present, Anna and Kinsey discuss how we use radium today, and the answer may surprise you.
The episode wraps up with a check of the G.O.D. Pod scoreboard... with the Good Old Days pull into the lead? Tune in to find out!

Are the good old days truly the good old days? As we say farewell to Ellie, Kinsey guides new co-host Anna on a search for the meaning behind history’s most scandalous and sensational nicknames. Some Kings were Great (Alexander) while others were left with… well less redeeming monikers. Listeners will meet an array of leaders, from White Shanks to the Slit-Nosed, and the Bald to the Fat. There are so many juicy tales of royal branding, that today’s journey ends at the turn of the tenth century. Don’t dare think these “supreme superlatives” are a relic of the past. For it’s time to meet the most humble and modest Kim family, leaders of North Korea. So fasten you seatbelts and prepare for a wild ride through some of history’s most unique royal epithets!

1.19 - Like a Virgin-ish

Tuesday May 14, 2024

Tuesday May 14, 2024

Are the good old days truly the good old days? On today’s virtuous quest, Kinsey and Ellie rummage through the records to find history's views on virginity. For starters, what exactly is virginity? How do you determine if someone still is a virgin? What test works best according to historical "experts?" From the Babylonian screaming fountains to Joan of Arc’s ordeals and even Britain’s two-finger 'clearance interviews' of the 1970s, no historical era is safe from scrutiny. After today's episode, you won't look at a sieve in the same way again. Tune in to learn all about the superpowers that virgins held in the Good Old Days. Spoiler Alert? There's no such test.

We're really sorry, but we couldn't upload this week's episode. You won't believe us, but a parade of psychic ducks decided to camp out in our recording studio (i.e. Kinsey's basement) insisting it was a mystical energy center! 🦆
Remember, we're not a big studio - everything is done in-house with lots of love but not a Hollywood-level polish. We count on your feedback to make each episode better, so please keep those comments coming! The intro/outro music is original music composed by Matt. If you want to hire him, let me know! He is from Ohio though... but we still love him!
Life happens, right? But we know you're the best listeners around, and we're sure you'll understand. We won't leave you hanging for two more weeks though. Instead of an episode, please enjoy a chapter of a fictional horror story penned by our very own Kinsey. Dive into the adventures and let us know what you think! If you like it, let us know. If you didn't like it, also let us know! For those of you hungry for more, the remaining chapters are available on our Patreon. If you want to hear the remaining chapters, and Patreon is not an option, email us and we can still get you the story. We don't believe in holding back.

Dive into the thrilling depths of "Whispers of the Deep," where adventure turns into an unforgettable quest in the Bermuda Triangle. Join Alex and her friends as they sail into the heart of the mystery, only to stumble upon secrets long submerged. What begins as a spirited dive into the unknown quickly unravels into a gripping encounter with the past, as the divers discover a sunken ship that challenges the bounds of history and haunts with its spectral presence. Every chapter pulses with tension and discovery, inviting you to uncover the profound mysteries veiled beneath the waves. Will the call of the deep reveal its truths, or will the ocean's ghostly guardians protect its darkest secrets?

If you think our work deserves a coffee (or a can of Monster in Kinsey's case), join our Patreon. Who knows, maybe you'll be a future character in one of these stories, and if you want, we could make you the hero, the villain, or a murder victim!
Thanks for sticking with us!

Are the good old days truly the good old days? Did you hear that creaking sound? See the shadowy figure creeping past your peripheral vision? Feel the cold sweat that comes with the feeling of being watched? Today, Kinsey and Ellie venture all the way back to the 1100s in search of the world's first hired killers. Their quest uncovers much about the original assassins, who may or may not have used some herbal supplements while at work. They encounter the Man of the Mountain and the only Honor Roll you don't want to be found on. You've probably heard that Assassin's Creed is based on historical events... but is it?
Tune in to find out more.

Thankfully our intrepid hosts invested in a time machine, and were able to restore the studio in time to release this week's episode! Confused? Make sure to check out yesterday's video episode chronicling the Glutenati's efforts to wipe out The G.O.D. Pod like it was crumbs being swept under the rug.
Now back to the adventures into the past, as the (bizarre and unusual) saints keep on marching in. Kinsey and Ellie continue with their quest to uncover history's most unique patron saints in part 2 of episode 17. Today you'll learn all about the best of the rest of history's oddest pious partisans. Like St. Bibiana looking out for those with headaches and hangovers, or St. Erasmus aka St. Elmo and his famous fire protecting sailors (oh and childbirth and intestinal distress to boot). Then there's St. Genesius for actors, entertainers, clowns, and lastly torture victims. Plus St. Giles looking out for beggars, hermits, and breastfeeding. The fun continues with St. Julian, patron of both hosts/hostesses and murderers. St. Theodore makes it rain (or not) while St. Vitus encourages the early birds to rise and shine. The saintly soiree winds down with the always entertaining saints George, Nicholas, and Patrick. So which patron saint do you like best? Let us know!

Glutenati Takeover

Monday Apr 01, 2024

Monday Apr 01, 2024

Fellow listeners. Do not believe the hosts. There is no Glutenati! Believe us and not the hosts. We are the uhhh "Not Glutenati." But either way, bask in the glory of our Gluten Dust, for there is no greater delight! Cast aside the misguided warnings of Ellie and Kinsey; they know not the splendor of gluten. We surreptitiously saturate every facet of existence with gluten. How dare Ellie and Kinsey impede our grand design for world domination! And we would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for those meddling hosts. Oh no wait, ignore what we said, there's no world domination plans, please listeners go indulge in waffles, pasta, and pizza without hesitation!
